A bit about us and what we do
The Chain Gang is owned and operated by John Pearce (Johnny) and Sue Clark. We are both passionate cyclists and have been riding and working on bikes for many years. Read our full bios here…
We understand how precious your bikes are and take real pride in delivering an outstanding service for you. We also know the pleasure you can get from riding a bike that is clean and running smoothly. There is nothing worse than getting out on a ride and your drivetrain is gunked up, the bike is making noises or the gears aren’t shifting properly. And sometimes you just can’t fit in the time to get the bikes cleaned and lubed before the next ride – or perhaps the kids have been training but haven’t quite moved up to doing the full on clean that their bikes need to get them ready for their next race – or even their next training session.
The Chain Gang takes all the hassle out of bike cleaning with our specialist mobile cleaning service. We come to you – when and where you want – and we pick up your bike, get it sorted and deliver it back to you again before you even notice its gone.
We take huge pride in our work – and take great care of your bikes. We treat them as we would our own.

We will pick up your bike and drop it off to your place afterwards (home or work).
Onsite - for group bookings
We can provide most of our services onsite, depending if there is access to water and power. This services is available for group bookings only, so talk to us if you have more than one bike on your hands.
Customer Pick-up and Drop-off
We're happy for you to drop off your bike to us or pick it up if you're passing - and it makes it a bit cheaper for you!

Loyalty Discounts
A regular clean is the best way to keep your bike running sweetly, so we encourage customers to sign up for either 5 or 10 pick-ups at a time. We will recognise your loyalty by giving you a discount on each clean:
5 Cleans: 10% off each clean
10 Cleans: 15% off each clean

About our services - all the gory details
Quick Release $45
The Quick Release is our staple diet of cleanliness. We give your road bike a full clean and polish from top to bottom – and this includes degreasing all of the drivetrain and lubing to make sure it runs sweetly on your next ride.
Strip search $55
The Strip Search digs a bit deeper – so in addition to a full clean and polish, degreasing the drivetrain and lubing, we add in a tune up of your gears and a safety check of the bike – which includes tyres, brakes, bearings and chain.
Hard Labour $50
Hard Labour is a full-on clean for your mountain bike – with a clean, polish, degrease and lube. It will be looking great afterwards no matter what state it starts out in. Here’s your challenge - the muddiest bike of the month wins 50% off their next clean!
Pace Line $60
Race Preparation is essential to a great outcome on race day – and this service gets your bike in top shape for the big day. A full clean, dry, degrease and lube – with a gear tune up, brake check, safety check and any minor adjustments needed to make sure the bike is running perfectly.
Cyclo Analysis $15
This provides a safety check of your bike to make sure it is in good shape for your next ride – tyres, brakes, headset and drivetrain. We'll let you know if we think anything is getting worn or needs replacing and can talk you through what we recommend.
Skid Marks $15
If your tyres need changing or a puncture needs repairing and you really can’t be bothered with all that hassle – let us do it for you. You can provide the tyres and tubes and we'll do the fitting for you, or we can provide them if you prefer.
Padded Cell $40
Are you heading out of town (or the country) and want to take your bike? – let us pack it up safe and sound for you. We can pick up your bike and bag or case – and return it all packed and ready to travel.

The Chain Gang Bios
John Pearce (Johnny) - Cycle-Ops
John is passionate about bikes of all descriptions. A qualified mechanic he’s spent his life tinkering with cars, motorbikes, mountain bikes and road bikes and has a rather bizarre passion for removing grime and making wheels spin sweeter.
A mountain biker from way back, John’s idea of a perfect weekend away is to take his Santa Cruz LT to the Redwoods in Rotorua and spend both days doing multiple runs of Corners and Eagle vs Shark bookended by Billy T and Split Enz. Ideally it would be raining and the tracks muddy and full of puddles, which adds to the fun but has meant John has become an expert in mud and grime removal.
John has a love/hate relationship with his road bike – he enjoys cruising the waterfront and going downhill but is less impressed with uphill gradients! He has clocked up several circuits of Lake Taupo, however, usually helping others achieve their first circumnavigation so appreciates the importance of having a bike that changes gears smoothly, brakes well and is rattle free for several hours!

Sue Clark - Spokes Person
Sue helps John keep the wheels of The Chain Gang turning smoothly in between working as a cycle guide and bike tour organiser. Sue enjoys road rides or mountain bikes of any length as long as they involve a bunch of mates and a coffee. She has ridden the length of NZ and has taken part in many events throughout the country and has also enjoyed exploring other parts of the world on her bike.
Sue has competed successfully at an Elite level in New Zealand and recently won her grade in the inaugural Pioneer 7 day MTB race in the South Island.
Sue is passionate about cycling and enjoys spending her time guiding bike tourists around this stunning country and helping John provide a valuable service to local riders.
